New from CMS

The latest news from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services on therapy services and RUG-IV.

Multiple Procedure Payment Reduction Policy (MPPR) Extended to Therapy Services
CMS posted the proposed rule for the 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule on Friday, June 25, 2010. Publication in the Federal Register will be forthcoming. The rule proposes a major cut in payments for outpatient therapy services, by applying a multiple procedure payment reduction policy (MPPR). Discussion of the MPPR begins on Page 126, while the therapy discussion starts at the bottom of Page 133. CMS proposes to make full payment for the therapy service or unit with the highest practice expense value, but it would cut 50 percent from the practice expense component for the second and subsequent procedures or units of the service furnished during the same day for the same patient. For more information, see the AHCA article at the link above.

CMS Holds National Provider Call on SNF PPS RUG-IV Implementation
CMS recently held a national provider call on the implementation of Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Prospective Payment System (PPS) Resource Utilization Group-Version 4 (RUG-IV). The presentation reviewed key aspects of the new SNF PPS case mix system, including RUG-IV, which will be put in place on an interim basis effective October 1, 2010. For resources, including the PowerPoint presentations by CMS and AHCA and more information, see the AHCA article at the link above.
